Freedom Through Reflection: A journey to self-improvement

I used to think reflection tasks were a waste of time—just another checkbox on my professional performance management list, with little to no impact.

That was until I embarked on a spiritual journey toward inner peace and self-love.

I realised that self-reflection is essential for personal growth and can be both positive and enjoyable.

Embracing Reflection

Now, I schedule two reflection sessions each year. The first is on January 1st, where I take time to answer the following questions:

  1. What gifts did this year bring?
  2. What have the major lessons been?
  3. What old beliefs have I left behind?
  4. What are my goals and intentions for the coming year?

This practice allows me to start the year with a clear understanding of my experiences and aspirations, setting a positive tone for the months ahead.

Mid-Year Check-In: Practical Reflections

My second reflection point is at the end of the academic year, just before the summer break. This session has a more practical focus, where I assess my strengths, limitations, and plans across four key areas of my life:

Professional Sphere

  1. What achievement am I most proud of?
  2. How have I made a difference?
  3. What would I change?

Social Sphere

  1. What have been my favorite experiences?
  2. Who have I enjoyed spending time with?
  3. What new activities have I tried?
  4. What or who do I still need to make time for?

Physical Sphere

  1. What progress have I made?
  2. What personal records have I set?
  3. What has worked and what hasn’t?
  4. What are my targets for next year?

Spiritual Sphere

  1. When have I practiced spiritual awareness?
  2. What has improved my inner peace and self-love?
  3. When have I felt my progress reverse?
  4. What can I do next year to ensure fewer obstacles?

The Ritual of Writing

These reflections aren’t just casually thought about; I make dedicated time to write them down. There’s immense power in committing thoughts to paper.

I use a reflection journal, which I keep and add to each year.

It has become a prized possession and a record of my growth towards living the life I’ve always dreamed of.

The Impact of Reflection

Changing my mindset towards reflection activities has been transformative.

Over the past few years, this practice has allowed me to delve deeply into who I am and how I am living my life.

It has led to positive changes that have made me exponentially happier and healthier.
