Is IB Psychology Hard? The Short Answer

  • There is a lot to learn – theories, concepts and key psychological terminology.
  • There is less memorisation in the 2027 syllabus – you no longer need to memorise the details of lots of research studies.
  • Understanding matters more – you need to explain and apply psychology, including through real or hypothetical examples.
  • Exam technique is important – knowing what each question and markscheme requires can make a big difference.
  • HL is harder than SL – particularly because HL students have the additional Paper 3.
  • SL has its own challenge – there is a lot of content to cover in the available teaching time, so staying organised and revising regularly matters.

Is IB Psychology Hard? The Long Answer

IB Psychology can be challenging, but it is very manageable if you understand what the course is asking you to do. With the new IB Psychology syllabus for first assessment in 2027, the skills students need have also changed quite significantly.

Is The New IB Psychology Syllabus Easier?

One of the biggest changes to the new IB Psychology course is that there is much less emphasis on memorising the details of lots of research studies.

In the previous syllabus, students had to learn a large number of studies and remember details such as aims, procedures, findings and conclusions so that they could use them in exam answers.

Under the new syllabus, students can use real or hypothetical examples to demonstrate their understanding in many exam questions. This means that success in IB Psychology is now much more about understanding psychology and being able to apply it than simply having a very good memory.

That doesn't mean the course is easy, though.

You still need to learn a lot of psychological theories, concepts and key terminology, and you need to understand them well enough to explain and apply them to different situations.

You also need to learn how to answer each type of exam question according to the markscheme. Knowing the psychology is only part of the challenge; knowing how to turn that knowledge into marks is just as important.

Is IB Psychology SL Hard?

IB Psychology SL has less assessment than HL, but that doesn't necessarily mean students can take it easy.

There is still a considerable amount of content to cover within the teaching time available for an SL subject. This means that organisation is particularly important.

One of the biggest mistakes students can make is waiting until the end of the course to start revising.

Instead, I recommend that SL students:

  • create revision materials as they learn each topic
  • regularly review theories, concepts and key terminology
  • practise applying their knowledge to examples
  • practise exam questions throughout the course
  • become familiar with what the markscheme requires

If you keep on top of the content as you go, the course becomes much more manageable.

Is IB Psychology HL Hard?

Yes. IB Psychology HL is harder than SL – and it should be.

HL students have additional content and assessment requirements, including Paper 3, which focuses on data analysis and interpretation.

Paper 3 can sound intimidating when you first see it, but I actually think it is a very manageable part of the HL course once you understand what the questions are looking for.

As with the rest of IB Psychology, the key is not trying to memorise everything. It is developing a strong understanding of the relevant concepts and then learning how to apply that understanding to the questions you are given.

So, How Hard Is IB Psychology Really?

IB Psychology isn't a subject where you can do very little work throughout the course and then memorise everything just before the exams.

But you also don't need an incredible memory or hundreds of perfectly memorised research studies to do well.

The new IB Psychology course places much greater emphasis on understanding, application and exam skills.

If you:

  • understand the theories rather than simply memorising definitions
  • learn and use psychological terminology accurately
  • keep your revision materials organised
  • review your learning regularly
  • understand exactly what different exam questions require
  • practise applying your knowledge

then IB Psychology is absolutely manageable at both SL and HL.

The aim shouldn't be to memorise more psychology. It should be to understand psychology well enough to use it.
