What Is the Difference Between IB Psychology SL and HL? The Short Answer

  • SL and HL students learn much of the same psychology – both study the biological, cognitive and sociocultural content and apply psychology across the four contexts.
  • HL students learn additional content – HL students study extensions focusing on culture, motivation and technology.
  • Paper 1 is the same format for SL and HL – both complete the same three sections in 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Paper 2 is also the same format for SL and HL – both complete the same research methods paper in 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • HL students have an additional Paper 3 – this focuses on analysing and interpreting psychological research data.
  • Both SL and HL complete the same type of Internal Assessment – a research proposal.
  • HL is more demanding, but that doesn't automatically make it the better choice – the right level depends on your interests, strengths and overall IB subject combination.

What Is the Difference Between IB Psychology SL and HL? The Long Answer

If you are choosing your IB subjects, you might be wondering whether you should take Psychology at Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL).

The good news is that the two courses have a lot in common.

SL isn't a completely different or much simpler version of Psychology. SL and HL students share the main psychological content, contexts, concepts, class practicals and Internal Assessment.

The biggest differences are that HL students study some additional content and take an extra examination paper.

What Do Both SL and HL Psychology Students Study?

Both SL and HL students study psychological content from three main areas:

  • biological
  • cognitive
  • sociocultural

They apply this psychology across four contexts:

  • health and well-being
  • human development
  • human relationships
  • learning and cognition

Both SL and HL students also learn about psychological research and complete class practicals.

So, if you take SL, you are still studying a substantial Psychology course. You aren't simply learning a small selection of the HL content.

What Extra Content Do HL Psychology Students Study?

HL students study three additional extensions:

  • culture
  • motivation
  • technology

These aren't completely separate units added onto the end of the course.

Instead, they extend the psychology you are already learning and allow you to explore how culture, motivation and technology can influence behaviour within the different contexts.

HL students also need a greater understanding of data analysis and interpretation because this is directly assessed in Paper 3.

Are Paper 1 and Paper 2 Different at SL and HL?

This is one of the useful things to understand about the new IB Psychology course:

SL and HL students take the same format of Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Paper 1

Paper 1 is 1 hour 30 minutes and has three sections:

  • Section A: two short-answer questions
  • Section B: two questions applying psychology to unseen situations
  • Section C: one 15-mark extended response from a choice of two

The difference is not the structure of the paper. HL students have studied additional material that can deepen and extend their understanding of the course.

Paper 2

Paper 2 is also 1 hour 30 minutes for both SL and HL.

It focuses on research methods and the class practicals and includes:

  • questions about the research methods used in your class practicals
  • evaluation of an unseen research study using psychological concepts

This means research methods matter at both SL and HL.

What Is IB Psychology Paper 3?

This is the biggest assessment difference between SL and HL.

Only HL students take Paper 3.

Paper 3 lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and focuses on the analysis and interpretation of psychological research data.

You are given quantitative and qualitative research findings and answer four source-based questions.

Paper 3 therefore requires you to understand research methodology and be able to interpret and think critically about psychological data.

It can look quite intimidating at first, but don't let Paper 3 alone put you off taking HL. Like the other Psychology papers, it becomes much more manageable when you understand exactly what the questions and markscheme require.

Is the Psychology IA Different at SL and HL?

No. Both SL and HL students complete an Internal Assessment based on a research proposal.

You design a proposal to investigate a population of interest using one of the research methods studied through the class practicals.

The IA is worth 30% of the final grade at SL and 20% at HL.

The difference in weighting is because HL students have the additional Paper 3.

How Much More Work Is Psychology HL?

The IB recommends 150 teaching hours for SL subjects and 240 teaching hours for HL subjects, so HL is intended to involve greater depth and breadth.

In Psychology, the main additional demands come from:

  • learning the HL extensions
  • developing stronger data analysis and interpretation skills
  • preparing for Paper 3
  • having more Psychology assessment overall

However, because SL and HL share so much of the course, HL doesn't mean learning an entirely separate Psychology syllabus on top of the SL course.

Should I Choose IB Psychology SL or HL?

There isn't one answer that is right for everyone.

HL Psychology might suit you if:

  • you really enjoy Psychology
  • you are interested in human behaviour and research
  • you are comfortable analysing information and data
  • you may want to study Psychology or a related subject later
  • Psychology fits well alongside your other HL choices

SL Psychology might suit you if:

  • you enjoy Psychology but have other subjects that are a higher priority at HL
  • you want to balance the workload across your IB subjects
  • you don't want the additional Paper 3
  • Psychology isn't likely to be central to what you want to study after the IB

Don't choose HL simply because you think it looks more impressive, and don't automatically choose SL because you think it will be easy.

Think about your whole IB Diploma, not just Psychology.

So, Is IB Psychology HL Much Harder Than SL?

Yes, HL is more demanding than SL, but the difference is probably less dramatic than you might initially expect.

Both levels study much of the same Psychology and take the same Paper 1 and Paper 2 formats.

The main difference is that HL students go further. They study the additional extensions of culture, motivation and technology, develop greater skills in data analysis and interpretation, and take the additional Paper 3.

So the question isn't really:

“Which one is easier?”

A better question is:

“Which level is the better fit for me and the rest of my IB subjects?”

If you enjoy Psychology and are willing to put the work in, HL is absolutely manageable. If Psychology isn't one of your main priorities, SL still gives you a substantial and interesting Psychology course.
